Award-winning artist Monika Pinias, popularly known as TopCheri, has released her latest and final album, titled ‘I Am Monika’, marking the beginning of a musical scaling back.
The musician said the project is deeply personal and reflects a season of growth, reflection, and real-life experiences. TopCheri opened her heart to fans, saying, “Please receive my last and final album, titled ‘I Am Monika’. Where I come from, being TopCheri was a far-fetched dream, but here we are. We believed we could, and we did.”
Speaking about the project’s inspiration, the singer explained that the album tells her life story.
“I felt the need to tell my story in song, the highs, the lows, and every lesson,” she said.
According to her, the album captures where she is mentally, emotionally, and creatively at this stage of her life. The body of work came together over time. Some songs were written during moments of inspiration, while others were created during challenging periods. Ultimately, the songs connected naturally and formed a clear story, making it the right time to share the project with the world.
TopCheri also revealed that ‘I Am Monika’ marks a major turning point in her music journey.
“I wouldn’t say I’m completely done with music forever. I am stepping back from releasing full-length projects for now. I will still drop singles and do features,” she said.
She added that she wants to explore other passions, focus on personal growth, and expand into other creative and business spaces.
Looking ahead, the artist shared her interest in working behind the scenes.
“I want to explore new opportunities, whether it’s creative direction, artpreneurship, mentoring upcoming artists, or ventures outside of music. Music will always be part of who I am, but I’m allowing myself the freedom to grow beyond just being an artist,” she said.
The album features collaborations with several talented creatives. Producers on the project include Andrew on the Beat, Mr Legendary, Maritoko, Bexxa Carter, and Pro Lagos. Musicians such as Kachazi, Omfenu Wanangula, Kalie the Vocalist, O.com, and others also contributed to the sound. TopCheri said each collaboration was intentional and helped bring “depth, authenticity, and fresh energy” to the album.
Fans can also expect more from the award-winning artist.
“There are things in the pipeline. Some projects are still under wraps, but announcements are coming soon,” she said. -pmukokobi@nepc.com.na
