Tourist cancellation claims dismissed … friendlier visa regime kicks off in March

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security has dismissed claims by a local newspaper that European tourists are cancelling trips to Namibia because of the introduction of new visa regulations and a malfunctioning E-visa portal.

In a statement last Thursday, the ministry slammed these allegations, clarifying that the E-visa for visa-on-arrival has not yet been launched.

“The newly-designed E-visa for visa-on-arrival will be launched alongside the visa-on-arrival application form on 3 March 2025. This user-friendly platform will enable tourists to apply for visas from the comfort of their homes, ensuring a smoother and more efficient entry process,” it reads, adding that comprehensive communication on the new visa regime was shared well in advance with all affected countries, allowing tourists and travel agents ample time to prepare for the changes.

The ministry further dismissed claims that banking information is required as part of the visa application process, calling the assertion “factually incorrect”.

It emphasised that the new visa requirements align with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), and follow common diplomatic protocols observed globally.

The ministry will provide detailed information on visa requirements, application procedures, fees, designated ports of entry and affected countries at the launch of the visa-on-arrival application form, and the E-visa for the visa-on-arrival.

“The introduction of this system is a key step in improving Namibia’s accessibility for international travellers. It will streamline logistics for tourists, and ensure a seamless experience when visiting the country,” the ministry stated.

Additionally, the ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the principle of visa reciprocity, ensuring equal treatment for Namibian citizens when travelling abroad.

Travellers and the public are urged to be patient as the new visa regime is implemented. The ministry expressed gratitude to tourism stakeholders for their contributions in shaping the initiative, and reaffirmed Namibia’s dedication to positioning itself as a prime destination for global visitors. -Nampa
