WINDHOEK – Concordia College played host to this year’s schools chess championship, which attracted established schools such as Wennie Du Plessis Secondary School of Gobabis and Paresis Secondary School of Otjiwarongo to participate in an electrifying 7-round marathon chess tournament.

The tourney was made up of primary and secondary schools categories, with each participating school or academy entering two teams consisting of four learners each. The one-day competition saw traditional rivals Weekend Chess Academy (TWCA) and Zandell Chess Academy (ZCA) battle it out like gladiators for the top prize with Team A of TWCA walking out of the coliseum victorious for the second time in a row after scoring a perfect 7/7 win.

The ZCA Team-A finished 2nd followed by Team A of the Paresis Secondary School. Teams A and B of Concordia College, as well as teams A and B of Wennie Du Plessis were left to mentally engage in a David versus Goliath battle throughout the tournament, but failed to defeat their more experienced opponents from Team A of Paresis Secondary School, as well as Team A of ZCA and teams A and B of TWCA. Much excitement was generated by the primary schools category as a close match-up was experienced among the overall winners. The thrill came about as the top three teams finished with 11 match points each, leaving their total game points as a tiebreak. Team A of ZCA was crowned the primary school champions after scoring  game points of 22 with Team A of the Windhoek Afrikaanse Private Skool (WAP) clinching 2nd place with game points of 21.5 followed by Team A of TWCA on 20 game points.
