The weeklong 50-year anniversary celebration at Ubasen Lower Primary School is aimed at the development of the school, says Principal Amalia Goses.

Goses says they plan to build a mini science lab, lay interlocks between the main blocks and set up roofing to use as an assembly point and playground.

“We budgeted N$309 620, which we plan to raise through pledges, fundraising and donations,” she says, urging former learners to plough back into the school through donations, by motivating learners and by becoming patrons for school and sport codes, like netball, soccer and volleyball.

Goses says the weeklong celebration that started Monday with a Cultural Day and a bazaar on Tuesday will continue today with a concert and dancing competition. “Tomorrow we will host Miss Jubilee, with Sports Day on Thursday and the official opening of the celebrations will be done on Friday. The celebration will end on Saturday with a church service,” she said.

The Omaruru-based school, which caters for children from kindergarten to Grade 7, has 820 learners, 28 teachers, an administrative officer and five cleaners.

Goses has been school principal for 15 years, although she has been at the school for 22 years. Some of the school’s prominent former learners include Collin Gariseb, Rapingua Shituleni, both medical doctors today, Errol Naomab (PhD) and renowned businessperson, JJ Doëseb, to name a few.
