United Democratic Front (UDF) vice-president Dudu Murorua on Wednesday made his comeback to parliament after a 12-year absence.
Murorua, a former National Council member, was sworn into the National Assembly on Wednesday. He replaced Victorine Shikongo, who was redeployed by the UDF to head its women’s league.
Party president Apius Auchab told New Era Shikongo was removed so that she can devote her energies on growing the party’s women’s wing.
Auchab said Shikongo’s redeployment had nothing to do with her performance in the National Assembly. “We talk of women’s empowerment, but we do not act on it. We sent her back so that she can grow the structures and empower other women,” he said.
Speaking to New Era after he was sworn in, Murorua said he will serve all Namibians. “It is true that I’m representing my party, but that will not stop me from representing all Namibians,” said the 58-year-old.
Murorua, a former governor of the Kunene Region, said lawmakers need to contribute to uplifting the lives of all Namibians. “If it has to be done from parliament, then let me also be one of those people who contribute to the cause,” the former Kunene governor said.
With Kunene being one of the poorest regions in the country, Murorua said: “The main thing is see to it that projects approved through the Appropriation Bill are implemented in the given financial years. That is one thing we have to check on regularly.”
