WINDHOEK – The 2014 Namibian UN Inter-country Games were officially launched in Windhoek on Friday morning at the UN House by Masinga Bandora, the Resident Coordinator and UNDP Representative in Namibia.

The games will bring together more than 500 participants from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the host nation, Namibia.

The games are to encourage UN staff to participate in a healthy lifestyle, promoting human values such as respect for opponents, acceptance of binding rules, teamwork and fairness while at the same time giving staff the opportunity to create linkage and friendship with staff members from other UN agencies and countries.

Sport codes included soccer, netball, 100m relay, and long jump amongst others. UN in Southern Africa has been holding the games since 2007.

At the opening which coincided with the International Day of Charity, Bandora read a message from the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon which called on people everywhere to act on the charitable impulses that reside in every human being and to start giving and keep on giving.
