The University of Namibia’s (UNAM) northern campuses on Wednesday assembled at the Jose Eduardo dos Santos Engineering Campus to reflect on and take stock of its academic activities.
Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at UNAM Adedayo Ogunmokun said Student Quality Day is a time to take a reflective pause and take stock of what and how the institution is doing, with the purpose of forging ahead with focus and determination.
The day was celebrated under the theme ‘My UNAM, My University, My Pride’.
Ogunmokun urged students to continue to proudly recite the theme as a symbol of consolidating pride and confidence in the institution. “It should become our battle cry in times of crisis and our victory cry in time of success,” said Ogunmokun.
He reminded students that quality assurance is a collective responsibility of the entire academic population, including students and staff. “We are all responsible for quality. Quality is everyone’s business,” he said.
The Deputy Dean further reminded the students that quality assurance begins with a good public image and cleanliness around the campus. Equally, quality assurance entails developing a culture of attending all classes timeously, regularly and submitting assignments on time. By so doing, students will complement the university in its quest to achieve excellence.
“It also requires that whatever you do or say, you do it responsibly,” the Deputy Dean advised.
Student Quality Day is also celebrated at the Jose Eduardo dos Santos campus as an open day, in which students are invited onto campus and exposed to the different programmes and activities available.
The open day also aims to encourage female learners to take up engineering, a career that has traditionally been regarded as a male-dominated profession.
The motivational speaker for the day, head of strategic human resources at NamWater, Kadiva Hamutumwa, encouraged students to be different and be trendsetters.
The day’s programme was filled with artistic performances and lively debates.
