WINDHOEK-Although the Namibian music industry is growing rapidly, some upcoming artists are facing difficulties in making their dreams come true and in taking their musical career to another level.
Management is one of the crucial parts of doing music as one need to raise funds and put the artist on the market. Petrus Shonghela aka YPS started his music career back in 2009. He does Afro Pop and has so far released three songs and is busy working on his debut album, which he hopes to release later this year. He says it is really difficult for an upcoming artist to work on his own with no one to raise funds and organise shows and promote him. “A manager plays an important role in an artist’s career. He does not only do promotions but also negotiate for projects and set up well organised shows.” He adds that for an upcoming artist it is hard to find new projects and negotiate for better payment.
“As an upcoming artist you need to be introduced to the market with at least three quality music videos. Shooting a video is expensive for an upcoming artist and you will struggle with funds to get projects done but if you have a manager then it will be a bit easier,” says YPS.YPS does not have a manager nor is he signed by any record label but he is determined to work hard to achieve his dream of becoming a well-established musician. He says the struggle is real but he is doing all he could to put his name on the map and build a strong fan base.
Aaron Diego Nanyemba is another upcoming artist based in Rundu. He says he has been managing himself ever since he started his music career in 2010, which he points out is a very difficult task for an artist. “It is really very hard and I have been struggling up to now because I do not have a manager. At least if I had a manager we can share ideas and he can direct me to where I need to go.”
Namibia is full of talented artist who need a helping hand to make a mark in the music industry. So if you think you have what it takes to manage an artist, do not hesitate, you can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
