KATIMA MULILO – The upearthing of some of the schools in flood prone areas of the Zambezi region, namely Nankuntwe, Muzii and Mpukano will soon start.
The upearthing (raising the ground level) of schools in the flood prone Kabbe North and South constituencies is considered long overdue by residents of the two constituencies, and its realisation will be a relief to them, as schools in those areas are always forced to suspend classes due to seasonal floods.
Zambezi governor Lawrence Sampofu announced this while delivering his state of the region address on Tuesday.
“A clearance certificate was obtained from the environmental commissioner to commence with actual work, and the consultant was appointed to supervise the project throughout its construction phases. The consultant managed to come out with geotechnical layouts and actual construction will commence as soon as the water subsides in those areas,” said Sampofu.
This year alone, Muzii and Nankutwe combined schools were at some point closed due to floodwater which surrounded the schools and submerged the teachers’ houses. Raising the embankment aims to raise the platform of the school to increase the carrying capacity and prevent damage and disruptions of classrooms due to flooding. Sampofu also announced that the multi-million Namalubi-Isize-Luhonono road is also set to be completed by the end of this month.
Once completed, the road will ease the burden on the residents of the two Kabbe constituencies who are always cut off from services during floods and rain season.
