Windhoek – The United People’s Movement (UPM) has expressed its severe disappointment over the allocation of land at Rehoboth.

The party accuses the town council of being “selective in selling land to those it favours while the majority in need of land cannot afford it”.

Jan van Wyk the national chairperson of the UPM also says land grabbing is continuing unabated at the town with the blessing of the Swapo-led council apparently in order to reclaim support it lost in the last elections.

It further said the UPM takes note of the “unfair treatment of its supporters in Burgershoek” and vowed not to tolerate the intimidation and do “everything possible to address the situation”.

According to the press release the party visited Burgershoek and wants the Rehoboth Town Council to attend to the needs of residents of the area as they need basic services urgently.

It condemned the newly elected council in not following procedures, which it says means that all decisions taken by the council are questionable, and now wants the minister to intervene at the town council, something it says the previous minister miserably failed to do.

It also lamented the attitude of some council employees and vowed to get to the bottom of alleged illegal appointments at the town council.

The party says it will continue to address issues such as land at Okahandja where it is not represented at the moment and will establish branches at other towns in future.
