The Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) says it will launch an investigation into the collision of two vessels within the port’s limits.
Although details of the collision remain sketchy, Raymond Visagie, executive of port operations, said a formal incident report and investigation already commenced on Sunday, shortly after the accident was reported to Namport.

According to a statement issued on Monday by Namport, two vessels – a fishing vessel Muxia and a reefer, Nova Coledonia registered in Saint Kitts and Nevis, a Caribbean island – collided north-east of Pelican Peninsula in Walvis Bay.

No fatalities or injuries were reported. Namport could also not say how many people were on board at the time of the accident.
Namport indicated the fishing vessel made contact with the hull of the Nova Coledonia on its port side. However both vessels remained in a stable seaworthy condition and returned to port immediately after the accident.

The fishing vessel is currently berthed at the fishing harbour and the reefer at the main port.
Assessments are currently underway to determine damages caused to both vessels. Circumstances that led to the collision will only be known once the formal investigation has been launched, says Namport.
