The Rossing Foundation recently handed over a full scholarship valued at N$200 000 to a visually- impaired second-year Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) student, Amy Andrew.
The scholarship, which includes tuition fees, a laptop with the required software, custom bioptic telescope glasses with a portable magnifier and an internship, underscores the foundation’s commitment to investing in students with disabilities by providing essential resources to excel in their academic journey.
Andrew was born with congenital cataracts, and was facing significant vision challenges.
To ensure that his needs are correctly addressed, the foundation collaborated with a South African-based low-vision institute for a thorough assessment that enabled the correct prescription of her custom bioptic telescope glasses and portable magnifier.
Andrew reported a significant improvement in her vision, and expressed immense satisfaction with her new glasses, which have restored both her sight and her confidence to excel in her studies.
“I won’t take this opportunity for granted, The Rössing Foundation has truly transformed my life”, said Andrew during her testimonial speech at the official handover ceremony held at NUST recently.
The young student said she can now see clearly, allowing her to engage fully with her peers and participate in class activities on an equal footing. This transformative experience will not only enhance her academic journey, but also foster her independence, enabling her to study at night without relying on others for help.
Continuing its support, the Rössing Foundation has offered Andrew an internship opportunity during the holiday, and she will be placed in the Administration and Finance department. This opportunity is designed to provide invaluable on-the-job experience, further contributing to her personal and professional development.
In addition to assisting Andrew, the foundation extended support to people with disabilities to the value of N$750 000 in 2024.
