Namibian artist Jackson Wahengo recently gave a heartfelt performance in Copenhagen, where he shared the stage with award-winning Togolese guitarist Alain Apaloo.
The intimate and cozy concert was organized by Nova Concerts, an initiative led by Cuban-born Abel Alazo, known for showcasing music from around the world.
The performance was more than just a musical event; it was a celebration of collaboration, cultural exchange, and artistic freedom. Wahengo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to perform with Apaloo, who is very well known in Denmark, Ghana, and Togo. “Apaloo is based in Denmark and recently won the Danish Blues Award, which is both an honour and a creative boost. It was a pleasure to play with Alain Apaloo, he is a brilliant guitarist and singer. What stood out is his way of laying the foundational playing, which gives me the freedom to sing and play solos,” he said.
Wahengo, who has spent several years living in Europe, is experienced in cross-cultural collaboration. However, this performance held special significance.
“Some of my songs are inspired by music from West Africa, which Apaloo is a master at playing. Apart from performing my songs, we also played a few of them. Performing in Europe is different,” said the artist.
The Shambo guitarist said the Danish audience responded with curiosity and enthusiasm towards the different sounds and rhythms, a beautiful blend of southern and western sounds, creating a very interesting mix.
He compared their performance with performing in Namibia, where the connection is rooted in shared cultural understanding.
“At home, people love the music because they understand it, they know and feel it,” he ended.
