Wanderers clinch NRU League title…Human credits team depth

Dirk Human, head coach of the newly crowned Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) league champions, attributed Wanderers’ league success to the quality and depth of the team this season.

Wanderers secured the 2024 NRU league title on Saturday at Hage Geingob Stadium, defeating former champions Unam with a 45-20 victory. In a post-match interview, Human acknowledged that it was a tough match, requiring both teams to give their best. He emphasized that the team had a game plan, which they executed to perfection.

“It was a straightforward match for us. We went into the game with a plan, and we stuck to it. The win can be attributed to many factors, especially our strong defense, which made sure no one got past them,” Human explained.

Wanderers have enjoyed a strong run this season. According to the coach, having a youthful squad played a key role in maintaining consistency and ultimately winning the league.

“We played over 100 players this season, trying new things and positions. With some players unavailable due to national team duties, younger players had to step up, and they did just that, which was instrumental in cementing our position in the league. But credit goes to the entire team,” he added.

Looking ahead, Human said the team would take a break before regrouping for training ahead of the next season, which is expected to kick off either late this year or early next year.

Meanwhile, in the women’s division, Unam Steenbokkies defended their title, defeating Wanderers 43-7. In the reserve league, coastal side Kudus secured a gold medal after a 46-27 win over Wanderers 2.

Unam head coach Edwin Basson expressed his satisfaction with the women’s team’s performance, saying, “When you’re on a winning streak, you’re always happy to win another title. The girls are thrilled, and we’ve achieved our goal for the season. Now, we look forward to preparing for the next one.”
