KEETMANSHOOP – Residents and visitors in Oranjemund have been warned to stay away from the Orange River as water levels continue to rise and strong currents pose a danger to the public.
The Oranjemund Town Council public relations officer, Glenadette Scholtz, said access to the river and surrounding flooded areas is prohibited due to hazardous conditions.
“The Orange River’s water level is rising, and the flow is currently strong,” Scholtz stated, warning that the riverbanks have become unstable and may collapse without warning.
Scholtz stressed that no swimming or entering the river will be allowed until conditions improve.
“Access to the river and surrounding flooded areas is not permitted due to hazardous conditions, including any swimming activities or entering the river,” she said.
Residents have also been cautioned against driving near flooded sections or attempting to enter waterlogged areas.
She further advised the public to avoid the river mouth and beach areas, where large amounts of debris washed downstream have created additional risks.
“These precautionary measures are necessary to protect lives and prevent drowning incidents,” Scholtz said.
The warning comes amid increased concern over rising water levels along the lower Orange River.
Flood-related disruptions have already affected roads in the south, with sections of the C13 route between Rosh Pinah and Aussenkehr recently closed after floodwaters submerged parts of the road network.
Scholtz assured that no major incidents, casualties, or significant concerns have been reported to the council.
“The river remains relatively full, and residents and visitors are still encouraged to avoid flooded areas and exercise caution near the river and the river mouth area. While the current river conditions form part of a natural water flow process, Council’s priority remains the safety of residents and visitors during this period.
Scholtz said that the council will continue monitoring the situation and will communicate further should conditions change.
