We never learn…do we?

We never learn…do we?

I recently attended a show with an international artist as the headliner. I haven’t been out like that in light years. Can you imagine my absolute shock and disbelief when I witnessed your classic case of disrespect towards a Namibian entertainer from the organisers of the show.

Allow me to contextualise this for you. I’ve been a professional creative practitioner since 2010. I have hosted shows that featured Grammy award-winning artists. I hosted multiple shows with 20 000 people in attendance. I hosted shows that featured some of the biggest egos in the world like Anthony Hamilton, the late AKA, Mafikizolo, Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, Kelly Khumalo, Davido, RunTown etc. As great as that may be…that also exposes one to the dark side of this reality. Which are organisers disrespecting Namibian entertainers because of the presence of their international counterparts.

However, that was back then. I haven’t hosted a mega show in a while (I’d love to though… halla at your boy…lol). There are new players in the game now and organisers prefer the new kids. Which is great. I just thought…that disrespecting Namibian entertainers was a thing of the past.

It’s insanely confusing for a 14+ year veteran like me because the last I checked, today’s new generation of entertainers are more vocal, woke and incredibly fearless. How does a Namibian entertainer get disrespected in today’s times that have “story time” on TikTok and cancel culture on Twitter (X)? So, pardon my absolute confusion and sheer shock when I witnessed the disrespect directed towards one of the biggest Namibian names in the game right now.

The actual incident that I am referring to is witnessing probably one of the biggest entertainers right now in Namibia being denied access to backstage/VIP. What irked me more…is that this said Namibian entertainer opted to STAY at the show after being humiliated and embarrassed by the organisers and bouncers at the entrance of the VIP area.

It was cringed to witness that. There are a lot of questions that need answering. Were his passes to VIP organized in advance? Dammit…even if it was not organized, HE IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN THE GAME RIGHT NOW. GRANT THE MANS ACCESS!

Are you telling me, if Scotts Maphuma or Maglera Doe Boy (yes, the Namibian entertainer I’m talking about is that big in a Namibian sense) shows up unannounced at a club or a show in South Africa…the organizsrs won’t let them in? They will.

They will probably get the MC/HypeMan to announce that SCOTTS MAPHUMA OR MAGELRA DOE BOY IS IN THE HOUSE with some fireworks and air horns. The crowd will go crazy. People will start tweeting/story it on Instagram. The show/club or event scores more credibility.

Not in Namibia though, nope, never nooit. Better take your a$$ back to general access before we throw you out of the club/event. Bruv…probably one of the top three biggest entertainers right now in this country was at the receiving end of that treatment at this show.

I was shocked, second-hand embarrassment of the highest level. That sh*t was crazy business for me. If something like that were to ever happen to me…best believe I AM OUT!!!! Dust. Bye. Sharp is ook alright.

Oh well…we never learn, do we? I’ll tell you why he stayed. He stayed because…like many Namibians, we believe we are inferior to foreigners on our own soil. I can’t blame him.

I’ve been on this subject matter for weeks now in this column. What makes you think one of the top three entertainers in the country right now is immune to this syndrome of inferiority? Still does not make it right.

It cannot be correct that one of the top three entertainers in the country right now is comfortable with being humiliated and embarrassed and STILL STAY and cheers on like a groupie. That’s crazzzzzy to me.
