Wesco expandsdepot in Lüderitz

LÜDERITZ – The mayor of Lüderitz, Phil Balhao, on Friday commended the Wesco Group saying it was contributing to healthier ecosystems and a sustainable future, particularly for the fishing industry where preserving marine resources is vital.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Wesco Group’s depot expansion, he said with the expanded depot, Lüderitz is poised to thrive as a model for balanced growth, an industrial centre that values both economic and environmental health.

“To Wesco Group, thank you for your enduring commitment to Lüderitz, to Namibia, and to a sustainable future,” he said.

The mayor added that the expansion of the Wesco depot is a step forward that not only marks the growth but also the promise of opportunities, development and a brighter future for the town.
Balhao said Wesco directly employs 60 locals at the expanded depot and provides short-term employment whenever there is more work to be done at the site.

“With Lüderitz having a high unemployment rate, this can be a strong vision to provide more jobs in the future, also putting the town on the map.”

He also said in Lüderitz the ocean is life, and Wesco’s services allow the town to thrive alongside its natural resources, knowing that its industries can continue responsibly, safeguarding the waters.

“Wesco’s presence has revitalised the local economy, creating ripple-effects that boost local accommodation, retail and services sectors, bringing both revenue and vibrancy to the community,” the mayor said.

Martin Markus representing the Ministry of Mines and Energ, said through their contributions in waste management and engineering services, Wesco supports critical industries like oil and gas, marine and mining sectors that shape the Namibian economy.

He added that the expansion of the Lüderitz depot signifies more than new facilities – it brings new skills, new jobs, new opportunities not only to the town, but also to the region.

“The expansion of the depot represents more than just growth; it symbolises a shared vision for sustainable economic development across Namibia.

This vision echoes our ministry’s purpose to make Namibia’s rich resources accessible and beneficial for all Namibians,” he added.
