IT is time to celebrate some exquisite vintage automobile heritage with the ‘Old Wheelers Club of Namibia’ (OWC), who is celebrating the 12th Old Wheelers Day on Saturday 4th October, to be held at the new club house facility at Stadium Street, Olympia.
This will be a not to be missed annual gathering of the club members vehicles to showcase some of the finest privately owned old timer classics in the country. The oldest vehicle to be displayed on the day will be a 1928 Model A Ford which will be brought down from Otavi for this occasion.
This, as well as a variety of some 200 old wheelers, is expected to be on parade, which includes sedans of all shapes and sizes, bakkies and motorcycles, many of which have been restored from old wrecks to their full glory again.
According to Chairperson (OWC) Eric Detering the theme for this year is ‘adopt an old wheelers’, with invited Windhoek motor dealers having the opportunity to pair up one of their latest models on their showroom floor, with one of the existing vintage derivatives and stand them alongside each other.
The day commences at 10h00 and will kick off with a parade of gleaming old wheelers moving along Independence Avenue, where the public will be able to appreciate old timers at their finest.
As with the past an exciting day lies ahead, with plenty of good food, a beer tent for refreshments, Old Wheelers items on sale, and a tradition raffle draw for to win a classic 1956 Nash/Austin Metropolitan 2-door sedan.
Standard Bank Vehicle and Asset Finance are the sponsors since the inception of this event in 2001, and for years have supported and helped preserve the collection of Namibia’s oldest motor cars by funding and sponsorship of the club’s events and outings.
The Old Wheelers Club of Namibia this year also celebrated its 25th anniversary, with the opening of a modern new clubhouse and museum. The Old Wheelers Club was founded in July in 1986 by 26 enthusiasts, of which ten are still strongly involved today. Currently there are over 500 members and approximately over 300 registered classic vehicles.
A new generation of members have joined the lively club with growing enthusiasm for the preservation of the ‘old wheeler’, as more families find their passion for the restoration and collection of vintage vehicles.
