All the trauma of the last couple of weeks dominating the legality of their presence, or rather participation, in the inaugural edition of the South African provincial club rugby championship, the Gold Cup, was temporarily forgotten.
After a slow start that saw them narrowly lose their opening match against Johannesburg franchise Pirates, Namibian champions Wanderers recorded their first win in the prestigious tourney by comprehensively defeating the visiting Limpopo representatives Platinum Rhinos by 60 points to 29 in front of a partisan home crowd at the Wanderers field on Saturday.
Installed by default the ‘White Stallions’, as the Tunschell Street outfit is affectionately known amongst its ardent followers, entered the marathon competition under a cloud of uncertainty, with Namibian champions Unam contesting the decision to ground them at the expense of the NRU Premier League runners-up.
Sadly, the competition rules do not make provision for university teams to compete, thus disqualifying the students from representing Namibia as the legitimate champions, after they had won the coveted league title hands down – leaving Wanderers to pick up the pieces for second place.
