…calls for support of Gladiators

WINDHOEK – Namibia Football Association president John Muinjo has appealed to all Namibians to support the upcoming African Women’s Championship in Namibia to demonstrate to the killers of women that women and their lives deserve to be respected.

“This prevailing trend appears to have become a way of life in Namibia which must be stopped as Gender-based Violence (GBV) is a human rights violation,” Namibia’s football supreme said  in a statement issued this week. “Football is no longer considered merely a global sport, but a unifying force whose virtues can make an important contribution to a sick society such as ours.” He further said society must use the power of football as a tool for social and human development by strengthening the work and initiatives of the  government and the NFA.

“The objective is to fashion out a strategic alliance to support local communities in the areas of health promotion, children’s rights and education, social integration, discipline and peace building values, which are factors for social change thus enhancing respect, tolerance, integrity and Fair Play, which are the cornerstone of Football.”

He said the football spectacle should also be a family event to promote family ties and community participation, while building organizational capacity, legacy and the image of local football.

“By being part of the games, we will not only support the Gladiators, but send a message that by hosting the 1st ever big football tourney on home soil is testimony that women are unquestionably equal to men and for those trigger happy and knife wielding men harbouring brutal ideas to be convinced otherwise.”
