Women’s Super League is back

The FNB Women’s Super League will make a welcome return this week, with four mouth-watering fixtures pencilled for Unam Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

The Namibia Football Association officially launched the league a week ago, with news of improved prize monies (from N$80 000 last season to N$250 000 this season), and the number of teams reduced from 14 to 12.

The first match tomorrow will be Nust Babes facing V-Power Angels at 15h00.

Angels coach Risto Shikomba said her team is ready for the new season.

“We are looking forward to the new season; we have been in camp since August because the league was supposed to start in September. Our target is a top finish,” Shikomba said.

He added that they had signed two players on loan from relegated Rightway, namely Elara Paulus and Guilehrmina Eduardo.

The second match will see Arrow Ladies face defending champions Ongos (formerly known as Tura Magic Ladies) at 17h00 at the same venue.

Ongos coach Shanna Gure told this publication that preparations had gone well and they were excited about their new adventure as a club.

“For the first time, we are starting the season with a fully fit squad. Preparations have been good. We have added one player from Girls and Goals (Julia Rutjindo). We are also hoping to add two more players from developmental structures before the window closes. We are just struggling with their parents’ consent at the moment,” he said.

Gure said the target for Ongos is always to improve – and this season is no different, as they would like to continue breaking club records.

“The league has a lot of surprises; we will not underestimate anyone, and we will take each game as it comes. We want to meet certain individual and team targets, such as individual goals scored by players and the team, reducing the number of goals conceded,” he explained.

He said by achieving these individual targets, the team will then be able to reach the main target of retaining their title and setting new records.

On Sunday, Nust Babes will play Ongos at 14h00 at the same venue before the weekend fixture concludes with a match between Arrows Ladies and V-Power Angels at 16h00.

This season, the teams will play double headers, and they will travel in pairs.

Nust Babes are paired with Arrows Ladies, while V-Power Angels are paired with Ongos Ladies, Ongwediva Queens are paired with Ramblers, Unam are paired with Girls and Goals, and Khomas Nampol travel Beauties and Namib Daughters got Okahandja United.
