Women’s Super League receives major boost

First National Bank (FNB) Namibia retail banking has reaffirmed its commitment to the Women’s Super League (WSL) with a sponsorship of N$9 383 772 over the next three years, broken down into approximately N$3 million per season.

FNB Namibia yesterday announced and officially signed the sponsorship agreement with the Namibia Football Association (NFA), marking yet another significant milestone in the bank’s support for women’s football in the country. The funds will go directly towards strengthening the league, its operations, and overall competitiveness.

Speaking at the press conference in Windhoek, chief executive officer of FNB Namibia retail banking, Mbo Luvindao, said the sponsorship represents far more than just financial backing. He explained that it is an investment in the dreams and aspirations of Namibian athletes, and a declaration that Namibians deserve a place on the global sporting stage.

“FNB’s relationship with the WSL is rooted in a belief that they can make it onto the global stage. Over the years, we have stood alongside these athletes through every challenge and triumph. We have seen their grit, growth and greatness. And today, we are choosing to amplify that greatness,” Luvindao said.

Acting secretary general of the NFA, Cassius Moetie, expressed his gratitude to FNB retail banking for their continued support. He highlighted that out of the total sponsorship amount, N$1 200 000 will be allocated directly to the 12 WSL clubs, with each club receiving N$100 000.

This financial boost will assist clubs in meeting operational needs and strengthening their structures.

Moetie further noted that the NFA and FNB have also agreed to allocate a portion of the sponsorship towards transportation costs for the teams.

“Transport is a very important element in football, because our clubs need to travel long distances for league games, and transport is a very expensive commodity when it comes to developing football in the country,” he added.

The renewed sponsorship is expected to enhance the league’s stability, improve player welfare and contribute to the overall growth of women’s football in Namibia.
