Young African continue fine form …as Nampol drop points

Gobabis-based outfit Young African climbed to the top of the Debmarine Namibia Premiership on Saturday after a goalless draw against KK Palace.

Khomas Nampol missed the chance to retain their top spot following a 2-1 defeat to Okahandja United.

The match between Young African and KK Palace was played at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.

The draw moved Young African at the top of the log with 19 points from nine matches while still having a game in hand.

Young African owner of the club Marley Ngarizemo credited his team’s fine form to discipline and determination.

“I think we have a good squad that understands the team’s goals. The players know what is expected of them when they step onto the field. I believe discipline and determination have been key to our performances,” he said.

When asked if his team is challenging for the title, Ngarizemo downplayed the idea.

“Every team in the league is strong. I believe they all have their sights set on the title. It’s too early to call ourselves title contenders,” he added.

Meanwhile, at Unam Stadium, Khomas Nampol failed to maintain their lead at the top as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Okahandja United.

Erasmus Ikeinge put Nampol ahead early in the second half.

Okahandja United responded strongly, with Chris Haoseb and Tjipenandjambi Tjaverua finding the back of the net to secure maximum points for their side.

Head coach Richard Garises praised his players for their persistence.

“I knew we would get a goal. At halftime, I told my boys to keep pushing because I had faith that we would score. That’s exactly what happened in the second half,” he said.

Khomas Nampol assistant coach Mathew Moses blamed the loss on his players’ failure to capitalise on their chances.

“I think we relaxed after taking the lead. That’s when our opponents caught us off guard. It’s a hard lesson, but that’s football. We now shift our focus to the next match,” he added.

In other fixtures on Saturday, at Rundu Sport Stadium, Ongos ran riot as they thrashed Cuca Tops 0-4 away from home.

Julinho secured a point after a goalless draw against Tigers.

At the coast, Kuisebmund Stadium, Blue Waters and Unam played to a goalless draw while newbies Blue Boys registered their second victory of the season after a 1-0 win over Woody Jacob’s Bucs Buccaneers.

Karasburg based team Young Brazilian were held at home after playing to a 1-all draw against Mighty Gunners.
