Young African ready to make mark in CAF Confederation Cup clash

The CAF Confederation Cup’s first-round action kicks off this weekend, with Namibian football club Young African (YA) set to embark on one of the most important fixtures in their history.

The Gobabis-based outfit will take on Eswatini’s Royal Leopards in the first leg tomorrow at the Obed Itani Stadium in Francistown, Botswana.

Kick-off promises to usher in a new chapter for a team eager to showcase its quality on the continental stage.

YA secured their ticket to the competition after finishing second in the 2024/25 Namibia Premiership, just behind African Stars.

Although falling short of the league crown, the runners-up spot ensured their participation in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup, an opportunity they are determined to seize.

Club owner Marley Ngarizemo expressed optimism ahead of the clash, noting the team’s readiness and high spirits.

“The boys are in a good mood, and all is set. We are looking forward to an exciting match in which we will fight for victory. We are happy to be part of this competition, as our dream has always been to give the players exposure. After these matches, we hope our players will be the talk of the continent,” he said.

On the technical side, experienced coach Woody Jacobs and his assistant Wallace Doeseb will steer the team from the dugout.

Jacobs, who holds a CAF A Licence, has settled in well and is confident of making an impact against the Swazi opponents.

To bolster their squad, Young African have been busy, as the club recruited South African defender Mlungisi Mkhwanazi from Casric Stars and his compatriot, midfielder Lethabo Raphalo, from Luthuli Brighates.

Local reinforcements include goalkeeper Vaitavera Tjatindi from African Stars, Motswana midfielder Viera Kazongominja from Mochudi Centre Chiefs and defender Okeri Maekopo from Ongos.

In addition, they secured loan deals for midfielder Simon Elago and striker Nicodemus Haikali, while experienced campaigner Wangu Gome also joined from Ongos.

Tuzerehi Katipuja and defender Arthur Hindjou completed the roster after signing from Okahandja United.

The return leg is scheduled for 26 September at the Mbabane Stadium in Eswatini.

The aggregate winner will advance to the next stage.
