WINDHOEK – Up and coming local archer, Henné Snyman, sent tongues wagging with a splendid display when the youngster won the year-end shootout of the Sport Club Windhoek (SKW) in the capital last weekend.

A total of 23 archers participated in the prestigious event that was once again generously sponsored by Build-It. During the qualification round, all archers had to shoot a total of 72 arrows at distances that were in accordance with their skill level and afterwards competitors were ranked accordingly for the elimination round.

The losers of the two first elimination rounds were then directly relegated to the fun shootout, which was created by tournament organizer Karola Woortman, in an effort to allow all archers to enjoy more game time on the shooting range.

Winners, on the other hand, progressed to the quarterfinal of the main elimination round, that saw 12-year-old Snyman win her quarterfinal 143:127 against Hendre van Eeden, to book a semifinal berth against Jackson Engel.

In a hard fought battle, it was Snyman who kept her cool to eventually triumph in the shootout with 147:139 to set up a date with Louw Nel in the final after the latter won his semi-final clash 143:141 against Ruan van Staden.

The final was a nail-biting affair with both archers on target ever so often but in the end, only two points separated the pair with Synman gaining 144 points, while the luckless Nel had to settle for 142.

Meanwhile, the clash between Engel and Van Staden for the bronze medal was a closely contested affair. After 15 arrows each, the pair was locked at 139 points and the tie had to be settled by a single arrow shoot-off but it was Engel who kept the upper hand against his rival – winning 8:9.

More great archery action came from the participants in the fun shoot with Christof

Lange and Morné Meyer contesting the final, which was eventually won by Meyer

138:134. Third place went to Babette Taljaard, at the expense of Connie Smit.

The last tourney on the annual archery calendar is slated for December 28 in Walvis Bay.
