At just 21 years old, Elizabeth ‘Lizzy’ Besser is not only making her mark as a dynamic centre for Tigers Netball Club, but she is also leading the team as its captain, bringing energy, dedication, and faith to every game she plays.
Originally from Walvis Bay and now based in Windhoek, Besser is currently pursuing a Chartered Accountancy degree at the University of Namibia. Off the court, she is a multifaceted young woman: an avid traveller, music lover, and proud Public Relations Officer for the University of Namibia’s Accounting Society.
She credits her strong sense of balance to prioritising her faith, personal growth, and meaningful relationships.
“Keeping God at the centre of everything helps me stay grounded. Whether it’s through netball or in my daily life, I try to lead with a servant’s heart. That mindset helps me grow and strengthens my team spirit,” she said.
Besser joined the Tigers a few months ago, describing the move as a major step in her netball journey. “It is an honour to captain such an amazing group of hardworking and dedicated players. It has been a season of growth for us all, and I am excited to continue contributing to the Tigers’ legacy,” noted Besser.
Her journey with netball began in Grade 4, after a brief stint with hockey that ended when she got hit with a hard ball.
“That was enough for me to switch sports. I tried netball next, and it just felt right, the fast pace, the teamwork, the challenge. That love for the game has never left,” she shared.
As a centre, she thrives on versatility and movement. “I love being involved in both attack and defence. I am always on the move, and that keeps me fully engaged. It is the perfect position for someone who does not like standing still,” noted Besser.
One of her proudest moments occurred during the Netball Youth World Cup qualifiers in South Africa, where Namibia competed against a higher-ranked Zimbabwe.
“It was an intense match: we were neck and neck the entire game. Leading the team to victory was unforgettable. The emotion on that court was overwhelming,” said the player.
Her preparation for high-stakes matches is as much spiritual and mental as it is physical.
“I always start my day with prayer and a good playlist to get me in the zone. I ask God for strength, focus, and peace. I also visualise the game, see myself staying calm and making good decisions. That spiritual grounding gives me confidence no matter the pressure,” she said.
During tough moments on the court, she remains focused by breaking the game into manageable steps.
“I remind myself that God is in control, and I concentrate on the next pass, the next play. I also draw strength from my teammates as we lift each other up,” shared Besser.
Her advice to young players is simple, yet powerful: “Keep God at the centre of your journey. Success is not just about winning; it is about character, perseverance, and teamwork. Be patient with your growth, take care of your body and mind, and never forget to play with joy and gratitude.” -lmupetami@nepc.com.na
