Young farmer sets innovation pace

Young farmer sets innovation pace

Ndeshihafela Shinedima, popularly known as The_Agrichic, is making waves in the agricultural industry as a full-time livestock and charcoal producer. Her inspiring journey began three years ago when her mother was resettled, providing her with the perfect opportunity to embark on a farming adventure.

Shinedima’s passion for farming was sparked by Oom Jan, a farmworker at a neighbouring farm. Oom Jan’s guidance ignited her interest in agriculture, and with the encouragement of her supportive mother, Elsie Shinedima, she wholeheartedly pursued her farming dream.

Utilising her savings and contributions from close family members and friends, she successfully established and expanded her agribusiness. Part of the Export Trade Training Programme gave her the confidence to manage her agribusiness.

Having spent valuable years at Agribank, Shinedima acquired a wealth of knowledge and experience, which she credits as instrumental in her success.

“Farming has had a profound impact on my character, she said with a smile. It has taught me patience, determination, and wisdom. Above all, it has strengthened my faith in God,” she said.

Reflecting on her journey, Shinedima highlights several remarkable experiences that have shaped her farming career. First and foremost, she takes pride in creating employment opportunities for her community.

Additionally, she emphasises the joy of producing top-quality products worthy of export, thanks to the relentless support from her family, friends, mentor, Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform staff, and fellow farmers.

Gathering around the fire with loved ones to share stories has become a cherished part of her farming lifestyle. Above all, Shinedima has been witness to the faithfulness of God, which has reinforced her belief in the importance of her work.

However, she does not shy away from acknowledging the challenges she faces as a young woman in a traditionally male-dominated field. Shinedima reveals that she has often been underestimated by her male workers due to her gender and age. Nevertheless, she remains determined to overcome these obstacles and break barriers.

For those aspiring to enter the agricultural industry, Shinedima offers valuable advice. She emphasises the significance of conducting thorough research about the chosen field, engaging with experienced farmers, and seeking out educational resources such as Agribank of Namibia’s informative YouTube channel.

Attending training and finding a mentor are also vital steps in acquiring knowledge and building a solid foundation for success. Hard work and dedication are non-negotiable requirements for anyone hoping to embark on this rewarding journey. Shinedima fervently believes that agriculture offers endless opportunities, especially for the younger generation in Namibia. For those without access to land, she encourages them to consider solving farmers’ problems by venturing into the realms of Agri-Technovation, Agri-News, or Agri-Consultancy. Initiatives like Rudy Agritactic Machines, Young Farmers Magazine, and Simpli Business Advisory Services can provide avenues to contribute meaningfully to the sector, she said.

As young Namibian farmers, it is impossible not to be inspired by unwavering determination and passion for agriculture. Shinedima, or The_Agrichic, serves as a shining example to all, encouraging others to embrace farming, contribute to the sector, and unlock their potential in this timeless industry.
