Fourteen young Namibian poets between the ages of 12 and 14 have been selected to partake in the third season of the Grass Roots Slam Poetry (GRSP) workshop and public performances.
The workshop is scheduled for September this year at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC).
Director of GRSP, Cecilia Oletu, says the workshop will give young Namibians a platform to showcase their talents and perform in public, in the hope this would inspire other young people to make use of their talents.
“We received more than 30 poems and only 14 were selected for the main event,” says Cecilia. She adds all the children will perform for free. Transport and lunch will be available.
“This is the third season we are hosting this workshop and poetry, and it’s slightly bigger and better this year. Next year we would love to cater for more than 15 participants as things keep getting superior,” says Cecilia.
The workshop will take place on September 7 to 11 during the day, while the main event will be taking place on the evening of September 11. Stardust, Toshi Haufiku, Miss H, and Tuma Hiveluah will be performing at the main event.
The event will be hosted in conjunction with Spoken Word of Namibia, Version TV and ChiNamibia. GRSP was initiated in 2012 by Nicolas Rondè and Sheena Schwartz, who have great confidence in the potential of Namibian youth, but recognise that they need platforms to display their talents.
