Following Zimbabwe’s victory over their South African counterparts in the Regional Confederation of Southern Africa Associations COSAFA Under-20 Tournament in South Africa just over a week ago, Zimbabwe’s Under-17 football team returned the compliment when the “Baby Warriors” clinched the Under-17 tourney in familiar style.
Zimbabwe defeated South Africa’s Amajimbos 5-4 in a penalty shootout in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Sam Nujoma stadium in Windhoek on Saturday.
The match ended in a 1-all stalemate after regulation time and had to be decided on the dreaded penalty shootout that saw the young Zimbabweans holding their nerves to clinch the week-long maiden edition of the Regional Youth Competition hosted by Namibia.
Regional powerhouse Zambia defeated old rivals Malawi by a solitary goal to take bronze in the 3rd place play-off at the Sam Nujoma stadium on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Namibian Women’s Senior Team moved a step closer to qualification for the finals of the African Women’s Championship when the Brave Gladiators walloped a hapless Botswana outfit by 6 goals to 1 in the 2nd leg of their qualifier at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday.
The match was played as a curtain-raiser to the final of the COSAFA Under-17 tournament between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Namibia advances through to the next round of qualifiers 9 -1 on aggregate and will now face continental powerhouse Nigeria in a 2-legged encounter in February next year.
