The Easter weekend ended in sorrow, mostly for the families of 14 people who lost their lives due to suicide and motor vehicle accidents, the weekend crime reports show.
According to the Namibian Police, those who reportedly lost their lives include a four-year-old boy who died instantly after he was run over by his father’s car and an 84-year-old who allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her room.
It was reported that on Friday, at around 18h30 at Iinongo village, Oshikoto region, a 36-year-old driver of a red Golf parked the vehicle outside the house upon arrival from work, his two minor children, aged four and five ran to him to welcome him back home.
“The driver then allegedly went into the house, leaving the two minor children by the car outside the house where he had parked it. While inside the house, the driver allegedly heard the cry of one of the children outside the house. He came out quickly only to find the vehicle in question sliding on its own and one of the children lying on the ground bleeding from the head. The driver thereafter took the victim to Onandjokwe Hospital where he was declared dead by the doctor. The deceased is a four-year-old biological son of the owner of the car. The other child was not injured,” reported the police.
The police said the next of kin were informed.
In a related matter, on Sunday, at about 20h23 on the B1 road between Windhoek and Rehoboth near the roadblock, a 38-year-old driver of a Toyota Corolla, which was travelling from north to south, bumped a male pedestrian who was crossing the road from east to west. The pedestrian died on the spot. He was not immediately identified and relatives were not yet informed at the time of releasing the report.
At Karibib, one person died instantly while 13 sustained serious to moderate injuries after a vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a train while crossing the railway tracks.
The incident occurred on Saturday at about 03h00 on the Omaruru-Wilhelmstal gravel road.
At Outjo, a nine-year-old boy died instantly, after a 41-year-old woman who was driving a white Toyota Fortuner lost control of the vehicle and it overturned.
The accident happened on Friday at around 08h00 on Outjo-Kamanjab main road, approximately 45km from Outjo, causing the death of Tulela Titus Nashima, while other three passengers aged; four, six, and 54 and the driver sustained injuries. The injured passengers and a driver were transported to Outjo State Hospital and later transferred to Windhoek for further treatment. The next of kin of the deceased were informed.
The police reported on Thursday, at about 11h25 at Hockland Park, Mallabel Anna Caparos (29), died after she hang herself in her room. No foul play is suspected and no suicide note was left.
At Kahenge, Daniel Ndjamba Mathias died after he allegedly hanged himself with a wire in his room on Thursday, at about 07h00 at Mupini village, Kavango West. The motive is not known and there was no suicide note.
In the same area on Saturday, at around 10h00 at Nzinze village, Kavango West region, Paulus Sikongo Sikongo (21), fatally shot himself with a shotgun in the neck. There was no suicide note and the motive is, therefore, not known.
In Wanaheda, Kafita Cariane (58) committed suicide and his lifeless body was found hanging by a family member on Thursday, 6 April 2023, at around 19h25, in Seychelles Street, Havana location. No suicide note was found.
At Katutura, police reported Fillemon Ngula (40), hanged himself with a rope in a tree near the Northern Industrial area on Thursday afternoon. No foul play is suspected.
In Mururani, on Friday, at about 19h00 at Mpora village, Kavango West, 84-year-old Angela Michael hanged herself in her room.
