WINDHOEK – President Hifikepunje Pohamba yesterday urged newly consecrated bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia (ELCRN) Ernst //Gamxamub to spread the message of peace, tolerance and mutual respect within communities.
The president was addressing a large congregation that included Prime Minister Hage Geingob and several Southern African bishops at the consecration of the new bishop of the ELCRN in Katutura.
“It is only through working together as stakeholders that we will be able to achieve sustained peace and combat the evil force of crime, especially violent crimes such as rape, murder and domestic violence, targeting women, children and the elderly,” said Pohamba.
The president said the government recognises the vital role of the church not only in providing spiritual leadership, but also in making immense contributions towards uplifting the living standards of people.
“We specifically recognise the historic and pioneering role of the church in the provision of health and education in the country,“ he said.
Pohamba said the government regards the church as a vital partner in nation building and in the social development of people.
“Government indeed appreciates and commends the good work that the church continues to do in serving our communities.”
Pohamba said that he was aware that the church runs social development programmes around the country including a number of kindergartens and schools. “I therefore, applaud the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia for the good work in helping our communities, especially the vulnerable members of our society.”
Pohamba further commended the church for its programmes on HIV/AIDS. “Keep up the good work,” he said.
