UUKWIYUUSHONA – Engen has donated N$1 million to build two new classrooms at Uukwiyuuushona Combined School and Okatana Primary School each in the Uukwiyu constituency in the Oshana Region.

The newly constructed classroom were handed over to the Minister of Education Dr David Namwadi by the Managing Director of Engen Namibia, Nangula Hamunyela last week Thursday. Apart from the classrooms Engen also renovated old classrooms at Uukuuyuushona Combined School of which one will be turned into a library. In addition, seven Engen dealers in the region have pledged to donate 180 desks and 180 chairs for the classrooms worth N$98 000.

Jan Everson of Seal Consulting Engineers has donated professional services in the handling of tenders and the supervision of the work. “Engen Namibia recognises the current challenges faced by government in terms of physical infrastructure in rural areas,” said Hamunyela. According to her Vision 2030 will only be realised if all stakeholders, including the private sector, play their roles and contribute towards economic development and social upliftment of communities.

Hamunyela maintained that as a leader in the Namibian fuel market, Engen feels obliged to give back to the communities and to invest in their sustainability and would continue to contribute to the welfare of the communities they conduct business in. “Education is particularly close to our hearts, as it is our future. Engen will continue its association with the two schools, by means of upkeep and maintenance of the classrooms, donations of books for grades 0 and 1, as well as upkeep of kindergartens in the informal settlements of Windhoek and Walvisbay where its head office and main terminal are located respectively,” she said. While receiving the classrooms, Namwandi urged other local business people to follow Engen’s example and to meet government halfway by contributing to the construction of classrooms. Namwandi has further warned against vandalism and abuse of government property, saying whoever is found guilty of the offence will be dealt with.
