WINDHOEK – A bumper entry of players knuckled down to some serious business in the popular Namibia Tennis Association Senior Tournament sponsored by `’Hunters Dry” in Windhoek last weekend.
The men’s singles was won by Louis Botha who defeated Henco Serdyn in the final by 6-3 and 6-1. Both players struggled to adapt to the chilly and windy conditions, but the patience and more accurate game plan of Botha eventually paid off as he overcame the powerful serving and big hitting Serdyn who appeared not able to find his usual touch. However, the matches with the highest level of drama and spectator value were played on Saturday, and saw Louis Botha needing three sets and almost three hours to overpower veteran player Grant Rau. In another higly exciting clash in the B-section, veterans Sam Kaulinge and Robert Riethmueller battled it out with long groundstroke rallies with Kaulinge finally prevailing with a 6:4, 6:1 scoreline over the much older Riethmueller who suffered cramps. The ladies singles final was won by Melissa Khuphe who dispatched Jenna Traubenbach in the competition that was conducted on a round robin modus. Highly entertaining action was also witnessed in both the A and B section doubles competition.
