Home Crime and Courts Fugitive denies cell escape

WINDHOEK – A visibly sick man made a first appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of escaping from custody before Magistrate Justine Asino.

Nabot Nandenga was advised of his right to legal representation and indicated that he would handle his own defence. He also said that he is not guilty and that he had paid bail on another case and was therefore allowed to go free. Nandenga who told the magistrate that he is an asthma sufferer and also takes ARV’s said that he had no access to his ARV’s since his arrest. The case is a puzzling one with Nandenga claiming he was let go by the police after they arrested him last week Friday on a charge of theft. Nandenga however claimed it was for a pending case he has in Oshakati where his uncle already paid bail on his behalf.

When this reporter spoke to him he said he was arrested for the Oshakati case, but that he also paid bail in Windhoek. Magistrate Asino postponed the case to October 18 for the confusion to be cleared and remanded him in custody on condition Nandenga be taken to hospital for treatment.
