WINDHOEK
Recently the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Becky Ndjoze-Ojo and staff of Standard Bank were greeted enthusiastically with songs and poetry by scholars of the Hage Geingob Secondary School in Katutura, says a statement from the Bank.
The occasion was the hand-over of textbooks to the school, which Standard Bank through FAWENA had made possible with an amount of N$5 000.
FAWENA, the Forum for African Women Educationalists in Namibia had approached Standard Bank for a donation to enable them to purchase much needed literature (Discovering Geography and Mathematics Examination Preparation) for the Hage Geingob Secondary School.
The school is situated in the informal settlement where 80 percent of scholars are from very poor backgrounds and the squatter area.
Ndjoze-Ojo and a board member of FAWENA thanked Standard Bank wholeheartedly for the generous and spontaneous contribution.
“FAWENA is based on a concept which sponsors African girls and which was established in 1992 in Kenya with the aim to educate, empower and strengthen girls to enable them to stay in school and to ultimately contribute towards sustainable development,” the statement said.
She also said that books are very important, as they are the ideas of other people and by reading books you interact with other people. She urged the scholars to look after the books, so that future scholars are able to benefit from this donation.
The school was opened in May 2001 as the Moses Garoeb project school. It was inaugurated on August 01, 2003 when the community decided upon the name Hage Geingob High School and currently has 635 learners up to Grade 12.
