WINDHOEK – Mental evaluation for a woman who stands accused of killing her 70-year-old lover is yet to be conducted nearly five months after the incident.

Victoria Goreses, 20, was sent for mental evaluation after the prosecution noted that she appeared to be disoriented when she made her initial court appearance on February 27 this year.

Goreses made an appearance from custody before Magistrate Surita Savage in Katutura Magistrate’s Court. According to the prosecution, Goreses has not yet undergone any expert mental observation to determine whether she is mentally fit to stand trial.

During previous court proceedings the prosecution explained the psychiatric hospital could not admit her, as there is only an intake of thirty patients.

“There are only thirty beds available and due to the space constraints, the accused has not been observed,” according state prosecutor Victoria Thompson.

Goreses has to go under psychiatric evaluation for the court to determine if she was of sound mind when she committed the alleged crime. Furthermore, the psychiatric evaluation would determine if she is in the position to stand trial.

The prosecution charges Goreses with a count of murder for the death of her boyfriend Sakava Nathame, 70. The prosecution alleges Goreses deliberately killed Nathame on February 25, along Ongava street in Okuryangava, Windhoek.
Goreses fatally stabbed Nathame with a piece of a broken mirror numerous times which consequently resulted in his death. What caused Goreses to commit such a dreadful crime against her boyfriend is yet to be determined.

It is alleged Goreses was released from the psychiatric hospital a month prior to the dreadful incident.
Goreses is expected to make an appearance in court on September 21, after the court postponed her case for mental evaluation and legal representation.
