RUNDU – Former People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (Plan) fighter Elia Muremi has been accorded an official funeral following his death last Sunday at the age of 65. Muremi died in a Rundu hospital after an illness.
Muremi, who will be laid to rest at Rupara in Kavango West region, was a renowned Plan fighter who left the country for exile in 1976. He was a trained soldier and a military telegraphic communication officer while in Angola.
Muremi coordinated telegraphic communications in the military and worked for the ministry of information until his retirement five years ago.
“We lost a freedom fighter and a veteran of our liberation struggle who contributed immensely to the independence of our country,” said Kavango West regional governor Sirkka Ausiku.
“He specialised in the field of communication. He worked for the ministry of information and was instrumental in bringing government programmes to our communities. He was humble, hard-working, committed and dedicated to his work until his retirement.”
The governor said the region was pleased the government recognised the late Muremi’s contribution and accorded him an official funeral. A memorial service in his honour will take place today and the burial tomorrow. He is survived by ten children.
