The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) recently opened its online radio station, NUST FM, to serve as a source of information and entertainment for its students and host communities.

According to the marketing and public relations officer of the radio station, Diego Kangootui, the idea of the station was initiated in October 2014 by Cultural Change Agents (CCA), which was tasked with assisting the transformation of the institution from its former status as the Polytechnic of Namibia (PoN) to the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST).

He adds that the CCA decided that a radio station would aid greatly to disseminate information to the community as well as aid in enhancing and fostering the desired culture within the newly established NUST.

“The aim is also to inform the community about the activities, opportunities and achievements of the individual and groups within NUST. It also serves to communicate important information that the student body and staff need to be aware of,” says Kangootui.

The station currently offers programmes ranging from Christian shows on Tuesday evenings to Women’s Development on Thursday mornings. It also has a purely entertainment section during lunch hours and The Kiosk show every day.

“The station has so far tried to spread its programming to service the needs of its community members. Once every three hours announcements are made for distance students to be able to stay updated on whatever is happening in the institution,” says Kangootui.

“The online radio station allows this medium to reach all of our community members, as NUST students range from as far north as Katima Mulilo and as far south as Noordoewer,” says Kangootui.

The radio is scheduled to celebrate its first anniversary on July 15 this year, with different activities to showcase the amazing talent within the community.
