Windhoek
The Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) within the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry yesterday launched a mass rabies vaccination programme at various localities within Windhoek.
The vaccination campaign will last until June 22.
Yesterday, large numbers of Windhoek residents, particularly from Katutura, paid heed to the call to have their dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies, a life-threatening disease that causes acute encepthalitis (inflammation of the brain) and is transmitted to humans mainly through dog bites.
The disease causes convulsions, excitement, aggressiveness, followed by paralysis and death. There is no effective treatment once the clinical symptoms of the disease occur.
