Windhoek

A 31-year-old woman was raped at her shack in 8ste Laan between the hours of 04h00 and 05h00 on Friday morning.

According to City Police spokesperson Assistant Superintendent Cillie Auala, the woman was sleeping in her shack and heard a person knocking. “She opened the door halfway and saw a man carrying something that looked like a gun. She immediately tried to shut the door, but the man overpowered her, entered the shack and threw her on her bed. He then strangled and raped her,” Auala said.

She said a neighbour came to the woman’s rescue and the suspect fled. According to the victim, she has seen the suspect before and will be able to identify him.

In a related event, a 43-year-old man reportedly raped an eight-year-old girl at a park in Katutura. The incident took place at the UN Plaza in Soweto, Katutura.

“The incident was discovered by a bystander, who heard a child crying and went to see what was going on. He found a little girl crying and a man with his pants down,” remarked Cillie. She said the suspect was arrested and the girl taken to hospital.

“We would like to advise parents not to leave their kids unsupervised. Always take steps to protect your kids, especially those under the age of twelve. Never leave them alone. If you are going to work, always leave someone to look after your children and do not trust a stranger with your children,” Auala warned.

In an unrelated matter, a woman was shot while sleeping in her shack when a stray bullet struck in her chest on the left breast. “The shooting occurred in Okakarara Street at Havana informal settlement when a man fired a few shots into the air. The suspect was arrested and the firearm confiscated,” Auala said.

She further said the reason the man fired the shots is unknown. The victim was taken to hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.
