The man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death was arrested at Usakos on Friday, where he was found hiding at his parents’ home.

Namibian Police spokesperson Slogan Matheus said the 35-year-old suspect was arrested at his mother’s house in Usakos at 00:25 on Friday morning. The suspect will be transferred to Windhoek and is expected to appear in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court today.

The man stabbed his girlfriend Magdalena Swartbooi on Wednesday evening while she lay awake on the bed talking on a cellphone.

After stabbing her the boyfriend dragged Swartbooi’s half-dead body into the sitting room, where the family members, including children, were watching television.

Swartbooi had on Saturday opened a case with the police that the boyfriend was threatening to kill her and had extended the threats to Swartbooi’s younger sister Erika and her children.

The family of Swartbooi narrated how the boyfriend had for the past two weeks called and sent text messages that he would kill the 34-year-old Swartbooi and burn down her home.

The man, who has been described as abusive, has one child with Swartbooi, a six-year old girl. Swartbooi was a mother to four children, one of whom is an adopted son.

The incident took place at around 23:00 on Wednesday night when Swartbooi’s boyfriend of seven years stormed into their home in Barlett Street in Goreangab informal settlement.

Family members said the suspect called one of the relatives on Thursday morning, inquiring as to what had happened the previous evening. “He called to ask if Magdalena had passed on or was alive. He also wanted to hear his daughter’s voice for the last time before handing himself over to the police,” one relative said.
