Elizabeth Muronga, 26, gave birth to triplets at the maternity ward of Rundu Intermediate Hospital shortly before midnight on Monday.

Muronga was brought in from Biro village in Mukwe Constituency in Kavango East and gave birth to her triplets by Caesarian section. A birth by Caesarian section typically entails a surgical operation for delivering a child by cutting through the wall of the mother’s abdomen.

Two of Muronga’s babies are girls.

“She underwent a Caesarean section and we ended up seeing there were three and the babies are matured and big for triplets. It’s quite rare, because the first one weighed 2.8 kg, the second 2.7 kg and the third 1.8 kg,” explained paediatrician Dr Chantal Riziki Nyembo, who is also the senior medical officer at the hospital.

Last August a 24-year-old woman gave birth to quadruplet boys in the same ward.
