Miss Heritage Namibia 2015 Suama Nuunyango and her first princess Selma Hashiyana, who were both crowned recently, have adopted the A.I. Steenkamp Primary School as their project school for 2015-16.
The principal of A.I. Steenkamp Primary School, Rudolfine Kamahene applauded the young ladies for taking the time to share their experience and knowledge about saving the lives of shack dwellers in the Khomas Region.
Nuunyango and Hashiyana demonstrated to two classes of seven learners each how to recycle a 2-litre cooldrink bottle into a candlestick holder. The bottle is cut in half with the top off, and filled with wet sand that holds the candle.
When the candle is lit and someone accidentally bumps it over, it will tumble upward again. This prevents it from setting the shack alight and torching it to cinders, often at the cost of human lives.
By educating learners about how to safely use candles, they hope to save lives.
Kamahene informed the coordinator of Aflatoun and also the two beauties that in recent times three learners died in three separate shack fires, which also destroyed the possessions of the shack dwellers.
Nuunyango will take part in the Miss Heritage World pageant in Sandton, South Africa. Any commitment to support the project would be appreciated. The school accommodates learners from all walks of life. Some of the Grade 7 learners recently became Allan Gray scholars.
