Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Jerry Ekandjo, yesterday heaped praise on newly crowned International Boxing Organization (IBO) world super bantamweight champion Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda, urging the boxer to bring even more titles home.

Ekandjo was speaking during Ambunda’s courtesy call to his office in Windhoek yesterday. The gathering was arranged to honour Ambunda, who last month outclassed Argentinean opponent Leandro David Esperante to capture the vacant IBO super bantamweight world crown on home soil.

After congratulating the new champion, Ekandjo went to great length emphasising the importance of financially supporting local athletes while creating a conducive environment for them to excel, saying it is the only way they can hoist the Namibian flag internationally.

“Ambunda’s recent success should serve as motivation to upcoming boxers and to all athletes in general. Namibia has great talent, especially in boxing, so all we need to do is just invest more in our athletes by providing them with equipment and various platforms to showcase their talent. We have already identified their needs and very soon we will embark on a journey of bettering the situation countrywide,” said the minister.
