Six Namibians are due to leave for the United Kingdom (UK) mid-September to take up their Chevening scholarship for the 2015/16 intake.
The six were successful in a total of 200students who applied and attended a pre-departure and farewell event hosted by the British High Commission recently. They will be leaving for the United Kingdom mid-September to take up their masters courses in different fields. Only brilliant students following studies in fields, such as climate change, good governance, human rights, media and trade and investment are accepted.
The six beneficiaries are Israel Kazembire Zemburuka (International Journalism, Cardiff University), Kipele Luvindao (Media and International Development, University of East Anglia), Liolisia Kariko (Digital Media and Society, Cardiff University), Jordaania Andima (Multimedia Journalism (Print & Online), University of Westminster), Joolokeni Haimbala (Cyber Security and Forensics, University of Westminster), and Julia Mushimba (Energy Law and Policy, University of Dundee).
Speaking at the ceremony, Hans-Christian Mahnke, Chevening Officer in the British High Commission, says the selection process was done by an international, as well local panel of judges and many applications were not considered because they did not meet the schemes requirement.
“We received a lot of applications and were sent directly to the United Kingdom for selection and only few made it because most applications lacked work experience which was required,” said Mahnke. He added that this is a great opportunity for Namibia and hopes that in the future more candidates will make use of this great opportunity via Chevening.
“We are delighted that we were able to increase the intake from Namibia to a total of six recipients and that we are able to send these six exceptional Namibians to study in the UK on a fully funded scholarship,” he said.
The occasion was graced by Bertha Amakali and Jennifer Kandjii (both Namibia Chevening Alumni Association) and Nillian Mulemi (Petrofund).
Chevening Scholarships in Namibia are awarded to outstanding emerging leaders to pursue a one-year Master’s at any UK university. The scholarship programme provides a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.
It is funded by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) of the United Kingdom government and partner organisations.
