The Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) tennis league continued on Saturday at the Olympia tennis courts, with the women’s team from CTC-A brushing aside DTS by 15-5 points to go top.
CTC-B wasn’t so lucky as they lost to SKW by 17-3 points, while the men’s category saw Poly beating Nampol by 16-4. CTC-A set the highlight of the day when they defeated Poly by 16-4 points to give them a comforting top position in the men’s second league ahead of Poly.
Risto Shikongo from CTC-C set the tone when he won against Eno Akpabio from CTC-A by 6-4, 7-6. However, that quickly changed when Elias Shikongo from CTC-A defeated CTC-C’s veteran Mkhululi Khuphe by 6-4 7-6.
The doubles saw Kuda Chani and Wellington Sibanda from CTC-A easily wallop CTC-C’s Bob Mould and David Ipinge 6-0, 6-1. Akpabio and Shikongo then played against Mould and Ipinge and won by 6-1, 4-6, 10-6. Chani and Sibanda had no problem winning against Shikongo and Khuphe 6-1, 6-2.
The fans’ favourites Poly once again set the record straight with Nampol when Poly’s Socrates Muyambo defeated Nampol’s Jaco Steenkamp by 6-2, 6-2. Nampol’s Thomas Weber lost against Poly’s Prince Loemba 1-6, 1-6.
In the doubles matches, Lucky Gawanab and Robert Riethmueller from Poly lost to Nampol’s Jan van Zyl and Theron Steenkamp by 6-7, 3-6. Muyambo and Loemba won 6-1, 6-2 against Van Zyl and T. Steenkamp. It was a close call for Gawanab and Riethmueller who won 6-3, 4-6 against Weber and J. Steenkamp.
In the women’s league, SKW dominated CTC-B. In the first singles match, Marybeth Gallagher from CTC-B lost in two straight sets to SKW’s Mariska Kuscke before CTC B’s Joyce Stalls also went down to Jessica Riedel from SKW by 6-0, 6-1.
