The Councillor of Uukwiyu-Uushona Constituency in the Oshana Region, Andreas Amundjindi, says 80 percent of people in the area now have access to potable water.
According to the 2011 census 73,8 percent of the people already had access to potable water, but he says 10 new water pipes have since been installed and several residents extended water pipes to their homes.
“We have perhaps increased to 80 percent since 2011,” Amundjindi estimated. The councillor says the constituency office was also on course to ensure that electrification reaches the remote rural areas, noting that since 2011 four schools were electrified, while 12 locations were electrified to boost business in the constituency Currently, 10 schools in the constituency have been electrified.
Amundjindi further said his office also embarked on a programme to bring the elderly pay-points closer to the people to reduce the vast distances that the elderly have to travel to get their pension.
He added there was only one pay-point in the constituency in 2010, but the number has since increased, with six pay points now in place.
The constituency plans to increase the number of pay-points to nine to ensure there is at least a pay-point close to each elderly person in the constituency.
“Our elderly people in the past travelled long distances, but if we increase the pay-points to nine, there will be no elderly person that has to walk such long distances to get their pension,” Amundjindi said.
