WINDHOEK – Paresis Secondary School (PSS) will play host to the 2015 School’s Team Chess Championships (Open) this Saturday in Otjiwarongo.
According to PSS teacher and chess club officer Ignatius Kavitjena, the first time hosts who have been participating in the tournament for the past eight years are excited to facilitate the championships and showcase their talent.
Last year’s tournament in Gobabis saw both the Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool’s (WAP) teams ranking in the top three.
WAP’s team A claimed top spot, followed by deserving runner-up Zandel Chess Academy and WAP’s team B coming in at third.
The tournament is one of the many strategic initiatives that were tabled at the NCF’s AGM a few weeks ago. This sees the NCF taking chess to the different parts of the country in order to promote the intellectual sport in schools and improve the standard of junior chess.
All high schools and chess academies are welcome to participate.
Each school may enter two teams made up of four players in each of the primary and secondary school divisions. Registration can be done electronically via email on president@namibiachessfederation.com or at the venue from 08h00. The registration fee can be paid into the NCF account or at the venue. Primary school teams will pay N$120 and secondary school teams N$160. The top three teams in each section will receive certificates and prize money.
The NCF thanked the sponsors of this year’s Namsports Independence Blitz for making a great contribution to the betterment of the tournament and the sport as a whole.
