WINDHOEK – The Namibian sports fraternity is mourning the loss of former Black Africa and Liverpool lanky shot-stopper Moses ‘Bra Moke’ Tunuu Kandjoze.
Kandjoze, a former radio announcer and one of the most astute football commentators this country has ever produced, died of heart failure in the Katutura State Hospital on Friday.
After an abbreviated stint as a footballer, bra Moke, a jack of all trades rose to prominence when he joined the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) as a sports producer under the shrewd stewardship of Sebastian Kamungu in 1995.
He showed immense talent as a football commentator and it was only a fitting tribute that his supervisors resolved to dispatch the man with the golden voice to Johannesburg for attachment with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), where he was to learn the art of commentating on live football matches under the tutorship of Africa’s football guru Mark Gleeson.
He quickly established himself as an accomplished sports commentator specializing in football, horse racing, rugby and boxing. A keen communal farmer, Kandjoze developed itchy feet and later left the national broadcaster to join forces with giant meat company Meatco.
His undying love for sport did not desert him as he entered the previously unchartered territory of equestrian sports. Kandjoze’s decision was to be vindicated as he hit instant success in the popular horse racing competitions with the majority of his animals clinching top spot in high profile races around the country. Burial arrangements are not yet known. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
News just in before going to print was that another former NBC sports journalist, Dave Salmon, passed away. The details are still sketchy but Salmon had also worked for the The Namibian and did a lot of freelance work. After leaving the NBC some years ago he moved to Swakopmund but was then back in Windhoek.
