Approximately 3,270 learners nationwide who did not meet the requirements for admission to Grade 11 during the 2017 examinations are currently repeating Grade 10 on a full-time basis.
As part of the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture’s policy on repeating, learners who do not meet the promotional requirements in the Junior Secondary Certificate (JSC) of 23 points and an F grade in English and are younger than 17 years are allowed to repeat, provided they are first-time candidates.
Further requirements for repetition entail that a learner who wishes to repeat should have attained 0 to 22 points in the JSC examinations.
The ministry’s spokesperson Absalom Absalom explained that these learners are eligible to repeat Grade 10 full-time preferably – but not necessarily – at their former schools.
“Learners may repeat voluntary, provided their schools of choice can accommodate them or alternatively they may opt to register with Namcol,” noted Absalom.
For learners who did not meet the requirements and are older than 17 years of age, the ministry encourages them not to despair but to rather enrol with Namcol and other part-time centres registered with the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture to advance their academic aspirations.
“These learners need to work hard to achieve the required points before they reach the age of 21, to be able to continue with Grade 11 full-time. The learners who are over the age of 21 are advised to register with Namcol until they complete their secondary education,” said Absalom.
